U-BOATS DESTROYED

SUCCESSFUL AIR ATTACKS RUGBY, May 30. A description of the recent sinkings of five U-boats in 10 days by the air-craft-of Coastal Command shows that in all five attacks the enemy attempted to give battle on the surface With their gun’s, and that not since the war began has there been such a convincing proof of, the power of air attack at sea. In 'most of the previous succcessful operations depth charges shattered the enemy submarines after they had submerged. Two submarines destroyed in Icelandic waters were straddled by depth charges as they lay on the surface. Only, one offered resistance. Another U-boat was destroyed in the approaches to the Bay of Biscay, in this case one of the Sunderlands nad its airscrew hit by a shell, but it was not seriously damaged. It was able to watch the engagement between its companion flying boat and the submarine. i An Australian Sunderland sank another U-boat on the surface in the same area.
