Mr A. A. Paape has received advice from the Air Ministry stating that the death of his son, Flying Officer John Mitchell Paape, has been officially presumed to have occurred on October 15, 1942. Passengers who arrived from the north by the airliner yesterday were Mr S. H. Hope from Auckland, Mr J. Penno, Mr G M. Stratmore, Mrs C. Burns, Mrs Penno, Mr R. Penno from Wellington, and Mr A. O. Wilkinson, Miss M. De Launay, Mr L. Mangham, and Mr W. Lister from Christchurch. Mr and Mrs D. Stewart, of 174 Forfar street, Dunedin, have received advice that their son. Pilot Officer D. C. Stewart, lias been promoted to the rank of flying officer. Flying Officer Stewart, who has completed his first quota of raids over Germany, and also took part in two of the 1000-bomber raids, has been instructing in England for the last 18 months. Mrs Tui Gordon, formerly of Malaya, who now resides at the home of Mr J. T. Knewstubb, of 12 Burns street, Port Chaimers, has received advice from the Colonial Office, through the Sydney agent of Ihe Malayan company concerned, that her husband has been interned in Malaya. At the time of the Japanese advance, Mr Gordon was engaged on survey work, and later joined a battery as a lance-bom-bardier.
