MARINES IN SKIRTS
A forest-green coat and skirt, a cap with a scarlet chin strap and a scarlet muffler for accent on the marines' traditional colour, form the basic parts of the uniform which American women joining the Marine Corps will wear. Noting with approval the quietly efficient job done by women in military service in Britain, the corps opened its ranks to the “ marines in skirts” early this year. The Marine Corps will employ women as stenographers, parachute riggers, radio workers, telephone operators, and in other behind-the-line work. Wives of marines are barred from joining up. Marriage to a marine after induction is forbidden to the recruits, on pain of being dropped from the corps, but marriage to army, navy, or coastguard men is no bar. In the Great War the corps enlisted 305 women, but commissioned no officers. The public called them " marinettes.”
