Mrs W. D. Young, of Wanganui, is the guest of Mrs H. D. Kerr. Mrs J. H. Meek and Miss Audrey Meek will return to-day from a visit to Timaru. Mrs O’Donohue and Mrs T. Cooper have gone to Christchurch to attend the O’Donohue —Taylor wedding.

Mrs E. F. Harvie left yesterday for the north. She will make her home in Gisborne.

Mrs R. Hudson and Mrs D. Smeaton have returned from a visit to Christchurch.

Mrs W. J. Porteous has returned from Timaru, where she spent the Easter vacation.

The Girls’ Auxiliary of the Navy League held a successful function in the Crawford Lounge on Thursday night, when visiting Americans were entertained. Miss I. Crooke and Miss E. M. Wilkin left yesterday for Lawrence to attend a Red Cross meeting. They‘will travel to Queenstown to-day. Mrs R. S. Black has returned from a visit to Timaru. Her sister, Mrs Peter McDougall, of Waiau, is at present her guest. On Wednesday evening the Dunedin Repertory Society entertained the men at a nearby military camp with a programme of one-act plays.

Advice has been received that Helen Marie Bateman, silver medallist at the regent examinations of Trinity College of Music, has been awarded an exhibition for pianoforte.

An interesting programme of drama and music has been arranged for the monthly play social of the Repertory Society, to,be held in the Concert Chamber on Monday evening.

On Thursday the North-East Valley Ladies’ Bowling Club concluded a successful season. A drawing competition was held, and Mrs A. J. White, the president, gave the prizes, which she presented to the following:—Mesdames Grant, Hands, Coulter, and Miss Clements. The minor prize went to Mrs Duncan. Miss Joan Wollerman, L.R.S.M., has been advised that, as a result of the practical examination held In 1942, the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music has awarded her the prize for the highest marks gained in the licentiate examination in the North Island. Miss Wollerman is at present in Fiji under appointment to the Fiji Education Department.

The Duchess of Kent invited a band of carol singers to call at her home, “ The Coppins," on Christmas Eve (says the Queen). After they had sung, Princess Alexandra came downstairs in her dressing gown to thank them, and shook hands with them all, wishing them a happy Christmas. Malthus moved a vote of thanks to the retiring committee members, Misses Margaret Just, Mollie Wood, Joan Tennant, Mavine Ross, and Catherine Napier. The following were elected to the committee: — Misses Margaret Dunlop, Yvonne Denniston, Judith Gallaway, and Nancy Just. Seconding the motion for the adoption of the annual report, Miss Dunlop stated that the proceeds from the dance had been devoted to the Prisoners of War Fund, and the association had “ adopted ” a prisoner of war, to whom it would send parcels for the rest of the year.

The St. Kilda branch of the Lady Galway Guild will resume activities on Wednesday next.
