AIR OFFENSIVE

BOMBERS OVER ITALY AN ATTACK ON NAPLES (Rec. 9 p.m.) RUGBY, Apl. 22. The Middle East air communique states that on Tuesday night R.A.F. bombers attacked Naples. Bombs burst in the quays and the town area, starting two fires near oil installations. From these and other operations all our aircraft returned safely. The London magazine Aeroplane states that the R.A.F. since January 1 has dropped more than 32,000 tons of bombs on Germany. This is only 5000 tons less than the total dropped for the whole of 1942. It does not include the tonnage the Russians and Americans are dropping in their big raids. The magazine estimates that the Italians and Germans in the past four weeks have lost 2000 planes on the Mediterranean, Russian, and western fronts. It suggests that enemy production is scarcely able to replace such losses.
