THE WAR AT SEA
ALLIED LOSSES . LAST YEAR (Rec. 7 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Apl. 22. Approximately 20,000,000 tons of Allied shipping were sunk last year, exceeding the tonnage built. The Truman Committee, making this announcement, described the losses as heavy, but not disastrous. The committee pointed out that the losses were reduced in the later months. The committee’s report declared that the submarine can and will be effectively met by the accelerated production'of new escort ships, combined with the use of destroyers and destroyer escorts and escort aeroplane carriers, land-based aeroplanes equipped for anti-submarine work, and submarine chasers, all of which are being provided. The only question is time. The Liberty ship is being designed into a Victory ship with more powerful engines, 50 per cent, higher speed, and greater cargo-carrying capacity.
