INFANTILE PARALYSIS

FURTHER SUSPECTED CASES Three further suspected cases of infantile paralysis have been admitted to the Dunedin Public Hospital, where there are now six positive cases and four others under observation. The new admissions include an indefinite case ,from Port Chalmers, that of a girl, aged five, who showed certain symptoms of the‘disease. One case from Ravensbourne is regarded as “ entirely , indefinite,” and another from Caversham is under observation. A suspected case admitted to the Oamaru Hospital showed some paralysis. The medical officer of health (Dr T. McKibbin) stated last night that although the position appeared to be becoming no worse, members of the public should continue to observe all precautions where children were concerned.

Following the decision that schools should be closed until further notice, the Otago Education Board, Otago High Schools’ Board, and the King Edward Technical Cojlege Board have decided that the winter term, holidays should begin now and continue until May 17, unless the Medical Officer of Health orders that the schools should be closed for a further period. On the instruction of the Health Department, the Citizens’ Day Nursery has been closed until further notice.
