MEDIATION OFFER
THE FOREIGN REACTIONS FEATURED IN SPANISH PRESS (Rec. 7 p.m.) RUGBY, Apl. 18. The Spanish press gives great prominence to the foreign reactions to the mediation offer by the, Spanish Minister of War, General Jordana, including the German Official .News ■ Agency statement approving the speech, although emphasising that Germany had no advance knowledge of the speech and pointing out that the Casablanca “no surrender ” declaration was not reconcilable with the Axis determination to fight on until the perils menacing Europe from the east and west are removed. The Swedish Foreign Office issued a statement that “Sweden has not participated in the mediation action or any other political action.” Commenting on General Jordana’s mediation offer, the Stefani Agency (Rome) says: “The idea that the Axis inspired the Spanish gesture is ridiculous and without foundation. The Axis cannot conceive any form of peace except a Tripartite victory.”
