OBITUARY

SIR HAVILAND HILEY ( PA.) LONDON, Apl. 1. The death has occurred of Sir Ernest Haviland Hiley, the expert on railway matters, who was general manager of New Zealand Railways from 1913 to 1919.

Sir Haviland Hiley joined the NorthEastern Railway in 1891, and was passenger manager of the Great Northern Railways (London) from 1905 to 1908. He left the North-Eastern Railway in 1913 to reorganise and take up the general managership of New Zealand Railways. During the last war he was a colonel attached to Headquarters staff. He was a member of a number of Empire railway commissions, and in 1923 went to Mexico to investigate railway conditions there. He later became adviser on railway questions to the Rhodesian Government. Since 1931 he was chairman of the English Traffic Commissioners (Eastern area). He was knighted in 1928.
