SOUTH OTAGO

BALCLUTHA Contract for Milk Supply.—Messrs Grace and Sons, contractors for the supply of milk to schools in Otago and parts of Southland, have just concluded an important deal with the Stirling Dairy Factory Company. The factory will supply Messrs Grace and Sons with over 1000 gallons of milk a day. The agreement will be operative for the greater part of the year, and will mean that the factory will not be able to manufacture as much cheese as previously. Personal.—After 50 years’ employment in connection with the Kaitangata mines, Mr T. Middlemass terminated his services on Thursday last. For the past 15 years he has filled the position of station master. Mr Midlemass has left Kaitangata to take up residence in Dunedin. The position of station master is at present held by Mr J. Whitelaw. Bowling.—On Saturday afternoon the South Otago Bowling Centre conducted a Fours tournament in aid of the patriotic funds. Owing to the petrol restrictions the entries were not as large as was expected, but nevertheless 16 fours, representative of the Balclutha, Milton, Stirling, Owaka, and Kaitangata Clubs, took part. The Stirling and Kaitangata greens were used. At Stirling a Balclutha four (R. Mcßride, J. McDonald, L. Moffat, A. Botting) won outright with three wins, and there was a similar result on the Kaitangata green, where a Kaitangata four (W. Braidwood, Carson, Kyle, W. Neil) also won outright with three wins. The final was played on the Stirling green, and after a close contest the Balclutha four won by two points, the score being 20—18. At the conclusion of play the trophies were presented to the winners and runners-up by Mr W. Jefferson, bn behalf of the centre. The centre proposes to run a Pairs tournament on Anniversary Day (Monday). On Saturday, March 27, the annual match between the Dunedin and South Otago Centres will be played at Balclutha. Farmers’ Union.—A meeting of the Clutha branch of the Farmers’ Union was held on Saturday night. The president (Mr S. Wtllocks) was in the chair. Mr A. C. Cameron, of the Provincial Executive, Dunedin, wrote that American marines would shortly visit Otago, and it was desired that the utmost hospitality should be extended to them. The men would be coming to the South Island in drafts. They were mostly from the western part of America, and 60 per cent, of them were from rural districts. The American Army was not asking for hospitality, as the men were willing to pay their way, but they were very appreciative of the hospitality already shown them in the North Island centres, where many of them had been entertained in private homes. The number allotted to the Balclutha district was 10. —Mr John, ston said the local Women’s Division naa already taken the matter up, and had agreed to arrange hospitality. The first batch would be accommodated in Balclutha. The men’s leave would extend over 12 to' 15 days. It was decided to co-operate with the Women’s Division and to arrange for cars to show the visitors round the district, provided the necessary petrol could be obtained.—Mr A. Anderson said the potato growers at Inch Clutha would require the services of men about the first week in April, and he had been inquiring if soldiers would be available. The camp commandant seemed favourable to the proposal, but a difficulty would be the food supply. This would entail too much work for the women folk; unless the bulk of the meals could be provided by the camp cooks. From 30 to 50 men would be required at Inch Clutha. Mr Inglis pointed out that it would involve the use of more petrol if the men had to be taken from Balclutha, where they were camped for the grain harvest, and suggested that a camp be established at Stirling. It was agreed to approach the military authors ties on the subject.
