MINISTRY OF WORKS
BILL PASSED BY HOUSE POWERS OF COMMISSIONER (F.0.P.R.) WELLINGTON, Mar. 12. Replying to the debate on the Ministry of Works Bill in the House of Representatives to-day, the Minister of Public Works, Mr R. Semple, said it had been suggested that the Bill would give a certain gentleman unprecedented powers: The Bill gave no more powers to the Minister than he had at present, and the Commissioner of Construction would be under the direct control of the Minister. He would have no unfettered powers and his authority would be handed to him from time to time in writing. “There is no intention of freezing out the small builder,” said the Minister, who added that he had advised them to amalgamate into co-operative concerns so that they would be better able to take on big jobs. “ I don’t care how many homes private enterprise builds,” the Minister continued. “The more the better, for there will then be less liability on the State. We need all the strength and materials we can - muster to build homes and to do justice to the men who have suffered and bled for us.” The Bill was passed.
