WAITAKI HIGH SCHOOL
MONTHLY. MEETING OF BOARD The monthly meeting of the Waitaki High School Board of Governors was held yesterday afternoon, Major H. S. Orbell (chairman) presiding. There were also present Messrs J. Rodman, W. M. Cooper, H. Grocott, W. Kinder, and J. C. Kirkness. Mr E. W. Tonks (Westport) was appointed to a permanent position as assistant master at the Boys’ Senior High School, and Miss Copland to a war-time position as assistant in the Boys’ Junior High School. The rector, Mr Frank Milner, reported that the proximity of Easter to the term end made the usual lengthy holiday prohibitive. He proposed that the Easter break should be from Friday to Monday only. Three weeks would then be assured for the first term holidays from May 10 to May 29. The school war service roll was being brought up to date by Mr K. C. McDonald, and was assuming impressive dimensions. He suggested that the board should send congratulations to the parents of Flight Lieutenant Ray Herselyn, D.F.M. and bar, whose record of 13 planes brought down over Malta placed • him among the most famous of Spitfire pilots, and also to the parents of Flight Lieutenant J. F. Barron. D. 5.0., D.F.C., D.F.M., who had conducted 67 raids over Germany and Italy. The principal of the girls’ school (Miss J. B. Wilson) suggested that the usual Easter vacation should be added to the term holidays, the first term closing on the Thursday before Easter and resuming for the second term on May 18. The board recommended Miss Wilson’s proposal to the Education Department for approval.
