MR FRASER’S COMMENT

PROMISE OF AID TO CHINA WELCOMED. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 27. Commenting this afternoon on the meeting between Mr Churchill and President Roosevelt, the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, said: “It is particularly gratifying that Mr Churchill and President Roosevelt were able to meet for such an important conference in close proximity to the actual fighting zone in North Africa. Consequently they had the benefit of consultations wtih the navy, army, and air force commanders of both the United Kingdom and the United States. A very significant and satisfactory announcement is that Genera] dd - ' Gaulle and General Giraud have commenced discussions and negotiations which give an indication of ending in a mutual understanding and amicable arrangement for the future of Free France.

“It is not necessary to emphasise for us in the, Pacific the importance of the message sent to Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek. It is clear that the Pacific situation was thoroughly discussed and its importance appreciated. New Zealand will hail with delight the promise to send to the brave and indomitable Chinese the support they so urgently need. “ The conference is another proof of the invincible solidarity of the United Kingdom and the United 'States, and of their determination, along with the other United Nations, to pursue the war with the utmost vigour and expedition.”
