GASSED BY CHLORINE
RESIDENTS OF SYDNEY SUBURB CYLINDER ACCIDENTALLY BROKEN (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 27. More than 40 people were gassed by chlorine in a Sydney suburb early this morning when the top was accidentally knocked off a cylinder containing liquid chlorine. The deadly gas spread quickly through homes and factories up to 200 yards away, and people trapped in bed or at work staggered into the strest in a vain effort to escape the choking fumes. Ambulance men and firemen, protected by respirators, treated those affected. Thirty people had to be taken to hospital. Carried by the wind, the fumes affected one girl half a mile away. The gas was discernible a mile from the scene of the mishap, which occurred when a lorry loaded with chlorine cylinders was being backed out of a garage.
