SCHOOL UNIFORMS
RELAXATION OF RULES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 27. The Minister of Education, Mr H. G. R Mason, said to-day that many schools had already relaxed the rules with regard to the wearing of school uniforms. It was realised that in normal times the wearing of school uniforms had many advantages, but a considerable demand was now being made on the clothing industry by the armed forces, and the Government wished to reduce as much as possible the civilian demand for special shades and materials. The Minister stated that he was. therefore, asking the principals of postprimary schools to relax # the usual rules regarding the wearing of school uniforms, and not to insist on pupils wearing school uniforms in any cases which involved hardship to parents or a waste of clothing materials.
