AMATEUR SWIMMING

MEETING OF OTAGO CENTRE At a meeting o'f the Otago Swimming Centre last night, which was presided over by Mr D. C. Bannatyne, it was decided to hold the Country Clubs’ Championship meeting at Dunedin on February 13. A programme consisting of women’s, intermediate, and junior events was approved, as well as several special “ war-time ” men’s championships. The Kiwi, Dunedin, and Kaikorai Clubs were given permission to conduct their annual harbour races at Vauxhall on March 0, and it was decided to hold the centre’s two-mile Batt Cup race at Vauxhall on March 13. The Kiwi Club’s application to hold an inter-club carnival on February 25 was approved, and the centre decided to conduct a similar carnival on March 10. Advice was received from the secretary of the New Zealand Council (Mr B. O’Neill) that the performance of Miss Marjory Hughes, of the Kiwi Club, in sw'mming 100 yards breaststroke in lmin 28 l-ssec had been passed as a New Zealand intermediate girls’ record. The secretary of the Taieri Club, Mr C. G. Lucas, advised that the club’s " learn to swim ” campaign would be held at Mosgiel from February 15 to 20, and that the Taieri Primary Schools’ Championship meeting had been arranged for February 18. As part of the centre’s educational campaign, it was decided to send a team of nine swimmers to Oamaru to give demonstrations to pupils of Waitaki Boys’ High School and St. Kevin’s College on February 20 and 21, the visit to Waitaki being subject to the school being agreeable. Jt was reported that a team would also be sent to Balclutha on February 20 for a similar purpose. Permission was given to the Port Chalmers Club to hold races at the Port Chalmers regatta on February 13. Tile manager of the Otago team, Mr D. C. Bannatyne, reported on the excellent performance of the team in gaining the highest aggregate at the South Island Inter-centre Championship meeting at Invercargill. The inclusion of the younger swimmers, who showed promise, had been a very good move.—lt was decided to congratulate tlie Southland Centre on the outstanding success of the meeting.
