The pole vault at an athletic meeting at Rugby Park, Christchurch, on a recent Saturday afternoon caused the officials considerable trouble. Only a few vaults had been completed when one of the competitors broke the cross-bar. After a short delay another cross-bar was obtained, but about two jumps later that also was smashed. Then a third cross-bar was found and it suffered the same fate. This was too much for the officials, and the event was abandoned.
