FRENCH SOMALILAND DECISION TO JOIN ALLIES (Rec. 1.40 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 29. French Somaliland has now come over to the side of the United Nations. An agreement was signed, to-day by British and Fighting French representatives and the Acting Governor, and will come into force immediately. This decision means that the last remaining outpost of the French Empire has now thrown in its lot with the Allies. The Cross of Lorraine is now flying over Djibuti, the capital of the territory. Djibuti, which has excellent harbour accommodation, commands the entrance to the Red Sea and is also the terminus of the only railway from Addis Ababa to. the coast. BRITISH SUBMARINES FOUR AXIS SHIPS SUNK (Rec. 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 29. British submarines in the Mediterranean have gained further successes. An Admiralty communique announces that in the Gulf of Hameimat, on the east coast of Tunisia, a submarine attacked and sank a small supply ship laden with petrol. Later, it torpedoed a tanker, which was beached. Both these vessels were south-bound. A third small supply ship was also attacked and sunk. Off the Italian coast, near Naples, another submarine attacked and probably sank an Italian supply ship. The vessel was laden, and was northbound.
