DEPENDENTS’ ALLOWANCES
STEPS TO SECURE PROMPT PAYMENT (F.0.P.R.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 3. An announcement that he had recently appointed a qualified army pay inspector and assistants was made by the Minister of Defence, Mr F. Jones, when replying in the House of Representatives to-day to an urgent question asked by Mr J. A. Lee (Democratic Labour, Grey Lynn) on behalf of Mr W. E. Barnard (Democratic Labour, Napier). Mr Lee had inquired whether instructions would be given for the prompt payment of allowances to the wives and dependents of soldiers. Mr Jones said the system in operation and the procedure laid down provided for the prompt payment of dependents' allowances. It was admitted that there were often grounds for complaints, due to delay, and in order to improve further the standard of efficiency an inspection staff had been appointed. He had issued specific instructions that this staff must pay particular attention to the matter raised by Mr Lee.
