FAILED TO REPORT
“OUTLOOK NOW CHANGED” (Special) AUCKLAND, Dec. 3. A plea of guilty was entered when Victor De Valera Seddon Coombes, a labourer, aged 22, was charged betore Mr J. Morling, S.M., yesterday with failing to report, for medical examination on April 16. 1942. The accused was called up in May, 1941, said Senior Sergeant Harley, but letters sent to him had been returned marked “ gone, no address.” He had, however, presented himself at the Drill Hall on Tuesday afternoon, when he said that he was now willing to go to camp and serve here or overseas. “ Why did you dodge so long? ” asked the magistrate.
“I now understand the matter much better, and my mind was not clear before," said the accused. “My outlook lias now changed altogether.” The accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within 12 months, a condition being that he should fulfil his military obligations.
