, CLYDE Fruitgrowers’ Meeting.—At the monthly meeting of the Clyde Fruitgrowers’ Association, presided over by Mr J. R. Ross, there was a full attendance of members. Messrs Kinnaird and L. Williams also attended. The principal business was the discussion of canning and drying prices. Owing to the greatly-increased costs in the production of fruit, the prices received in the past do not give growers a reasonable return. A meeting of growers will be held at Alexandra on Thursday to discuss the position with a representative of the dehydrating company and the food controller. . , „ Bowling.—The first game for the Jolly Cup was played at Bannockburn on Saturday, the holders. B. Clark, W. Henderson, J Parsons and A. Pearson (21), defeating an Alexandra rink. A. Hamilton,. C. Symons, A. Burt and J. Middlemiss (20), Wakatipu has lodged the next challenge. Rainfall.—The rainfall taken at the county offices at Clyde to the end of October is as follow's:—January. 2.J4 inches: February, 2.63 inches: March, .99 inches; April, 0.81 inches: May, 1.11 inches: June, 0.19 inches: July, 0.82 inches: August, 0.63 inches; September. 1.11 inches; October, 3.51 inches. Soldiers Entertained.—Hurried arrangemerits were commenced on Friday to entertain at a public social Sergeant W. Forrest and Signalman J. McArthur, who are at present home on leave. In spite of the short notice, the hall was packed on Saturday night, and the supper room was occupied by card players. The speakers for the evening were Mr H. E. Stevens (chairman of the committee), Mr J. P„ McKissock (R.S.A.), and Mr W, A. Bodkin, the last-named making presentations from the townspeople to the men, both of whom suitably replied. As usual, the success attending the function was largely' due to the women members of the committee, whose continued efforts are worthy of commendation. Other local men home on leave who were present were Troopers R. Hanning, H. Annan and D. Nyhon, and Privates E. Iversen and L. Stevens. ALEXANDRA Soldigrs Entertained. —On Friday the residents met to honour Corporal John Forrest and Private J. W. M. Wright, who are on leave. On behalf of the citizens the Mayor (Mr A. McKellar) presented 1 hem with wallets and enclosures. Messrs W. A. Bodkin. M.P.. and J. R. McKissock (president of the R.S.A.) also extended best wishes to tire men, who suitably replied. Bowling.—A progressive Pairs tournament w'as held by the Alexandra Bowling Club last Saturday, when 28 competitors took part. The winners were' W. H. King (skip) and W. Park (lead). Angling.—Some excellent baskets have been obtained by anglers in local streams during recent w'eek-ends. All have reported good sport, and some fine fish have been grassed. One fisherman landed a 51b trout in excellent condition. Personal.—Sister Belle Henderson, who has been in Alexandra on leave, left on Saturday for a northern camp, where she will be drafted to an overseas unit of the nursing division.—Messrs Morland, Woods, Finlayson, and Rowe, of the Otago Education Board’s inspectorial staff, are at present carrying out their annual inspection of district schools. WANAKA The Rainfall.—The rainfall for the month of October was as follows, last year’s figures being given in parentheses:—Rainfall, 4.5 inches (0.34 inches): number ofrain days, 8 (2), Proposed New School.—Three members of the Southland Education Board—Messrs S. Rice,* W. Bell, and J. Philp—together with the architect (Mr J. J. Gough) and the secretary (Mr H. T. Thompson) paid a visit 1o Wanaka last Tuesday. They had a discussion with the local School Committee about various matters, and also discussed with the committee the matter of the proposed new school. Personal.—The following soldiers are at present visiting Wanaka on leave:—R. D. Robertson, D. Dickson, M. Bell, A. Bovett, A. Jafckson, and T. Templeton.—Mr D. C. Aubrey has received advice that his son, David, has received his wings with the rank of sergeant pilot, and is now stationed in Britain.
