MOMENTOUS EVENTS IN MEDITERRANEAN WAR THEATRE.—The scope of the Allied operations on the coast of North Africa is illustrated in this map. The Axis forces, which for so long were threatening Alexandria, have now been driven out of Egypt, and advance units of the Allied forces arc reported to have penetrated as far as Benghazi. In the west an Allied force drawn largely from the United States has made landings in the French colonies. At Algiers the Allies are already in full occupation, and Oran, where part of the French Fleet was destroyed by the British Navy in July, 1940, is another point at which operations are known to be in progress. At Casablanca, on the Atlantic coast of French Morocco, Allied forces are reported to have met opposition from French naval units. In April last it was reported that the French had a battleship and two cruisers at Casablanca and one cruiser at Oran. Another cruiser was said to be stationed at Bizerta, in Tunis.
