CANADA’S POSITION

RELATIONS WITH .VICHY (Rec. 10 p.m.) OTTAWA, Nov. 8. A Canadian press correspondent says that Canada’s diplomatic relations are believed to be dose to breaking point following Vichy’s severance of relations with the United States. The Prime Minister, Mr Mackenzie King, sent a message to President Roosevelt expressing best wishes for the successful conclusion of the mighty mission the United States has undertaken in Africa.

The Ottawa correspondent of the New York Times expresses the opinion that Mr Mackenzie King conveyed the impression that he would not take steps to break off relations with Vichy, and that future action depended on Laval’s decision. “ Some resistance is to be expected,” Mr King said, “ but in no circumstances could that mean that we are at war with the real France, and any resistance will really be German resistance. It is clear that the French people are awaiting the hour of liberation, and it is the Canadians’ duty to convince them that we are eager to help them.”
