Ministerial

The Minister of Defence, Mr F. Jones, was engaged yesterday in hearing private deputations and on departmental business. This afternoon he will preside at the cersmonial in connection with the launching of a minesweeper at Port Chalmers. The Minister will accompany the Vice-Regal party on its return to Wellington by air to-morrow.

Mr J. Roberts and Captain T. Bowling, members of the Waterfront Control Commission, returned north by the express last night. Dr C. E. Hercus and Dr W. Newlands left by the express last night to attend a meeting of the New Zealand Medical Council in Wellington. Mr J. H. Kirkwood, Mr F. Goodwin. Mr W. J. WineSeld. and Mr J. Mowat left by the express last night to attend a meeting of the New Zealand Carriers' Federation in Wellington. Dr J. B. Dawson and Mr Gordon Bell were passengers by the express last night en route for Wellington, where they will attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand College of Surgeons. Major J. H. Kempthorne, & member of the staff of John McGlashan College, is now instructor at the Staff College, Middle East, and has been given the temporary rank of lieu-tenant-colonel.

At the thirty-first annual meeting of the Otago branch of the Royal Lifesaving Society last night Mr H. H. Henderson was elected to the position of president for the twentieth consecutive year. Sir Harry Batterbee, High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, and Lady Batterbee will arrive in Christchurch on the 23rd inst. Sir Harry Batterbee will leave Christchurch for Dunedin on September 28 and will return to Wellington on October 3. Messrs M. W. Grantham (chairman), S. D. Macpherson, H. H. Gillard. and W. J. Mathers (secretary) will leave by the express to-morrow morning to conduct sittings of the Industrial Manpower Committee in South Otago and Southland. They will return on Saturday.

Passengers who arrived by the airliner from the north yesterday were; Miss E. Smith and Miss M. Gardiner from Auckland, Squadron Leader G. Carter, Mr J. Fletcher, Captain and Mrs W. A. Pyatt, Engineer-captain G. W. Bodell. Mr L. ft. Stevens and Mr J. C. Fletcher from Wellington, and Miss J. Buchanan from Christchurch.
