FARM LABOUR

ESSENTIAL TO WAR EFFORT (P.A.) AUCKLAND. June 17. " Three things are paramount in the war crisis—food, equipment, and manpower—and everything is based on manpower," said Mr J. N. Massey. M.P., at a conference called by him as chairman of the Franklin County Council. " Our soldiers must be supplied with food, and the position is desperate," he added. " There are many men in camp to-day who would be serving their country just as well on the farm," he said. " Herds are being reduced, and it will take years to bring them back if the drainage of skilled farm workers continues." Mr R. C. Clark, chairman of the Primary Production Council, said the council had hot had the sympathetic hearing from the Armed' Forces Appeal Board that it should have had. Certain industries had been combed too drastically. It was decided to form the conference into a committee,to collect facts for Mr Massey to present to the Prime Minister. . The committee is to meet again on Tuesday next.
