Vice-Regal The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall. vesterday received the American Minister, Brigadier-general Patrick J. Hurley. In the afternoon his Excellency received Sir James Elliott, vicechairman of the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society. Mr J. E. Thomas, Rationing Controller for the Dominion, left for the north last night. Sergeant Ralph Allan, of Roslyn, wiio has been serving in the Middle East, has returned to Dunedin. Major R. D. B. Paterson, who has been on service in the Middle East, returned to Dunedin by the express last night. Mr W. Jacobsen has been appointed to represent the Otago Education Board on the Vocational Guidance Association. Mr James Wallace, chairman of the Otago Education Board, has been reappointed to represent the board on the council of the University of Otago. Information has been received that Major J. R. Dawson, R.A.M.C, elder son of Professor and Mrs J. B. Dawoon. has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant-colonel and is in command of the 189th (British) Field Ambulance.
Mr E. Macdonald has been re-elected chairman of the South Canterbury Hospital Board and representative of the board on the Waipiata Sanatorium Committee. Mr Macdonald joined (he Hospital Board in 1922, and since 1927 has held the office of chairman. Mr Andrew Liddell, of Winton, will be 100 years old to-day. He was bom at Paisley, Scotland, and came to New Zealand wjth his parents in 1858. From 1869 to 1882 he was in business in Christchurch as a saddler. He was Mayor of Winton from 1896 to 1898. It is stated that he is the oldest Oddfellow in the world, having been a member for 76 years.
