CROMWELL Borough Council.—The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Thursday night, when there were present: The Mayor (Mr James C. Parcell), Crs Jolly, Jelley. Partridge, Bowie, Ree and Ibbetson. Quotations were received for a Union Jack, and it was decided to procure a three-yard flag.—The Fire Brigade’s request for repairs to a window and for the grant of the annual subscription were approved.—The Vincent County Council wrote in reply to an offer regarding the grader, and the Mayor was appointed to meet the county chairman and discuss the matter.—The Vincent Hospital Board forwarded a statement of the estimates for the ensuing year, and advising the borough of Its share of the levy (£371 8s). —In connection with the calling up of the borough dayman for service, it was decided to lodge an appeal.—The building inspector forwarded a report on a building permit issued in favour of the Rev. B. H. Riseley for section 71, block XLIII. Two items were contrary to the borough building by-laws. After some discussion it was moved—" That the council record its dissatisfaction with the action of Mr Riseley in altering his building plans, without the knowledge of the council, in such a way that the building did not comply with the building by-laws, particularly so as he occupied a seat on the council.” There was no seconder to the motion.—lt was resolved that all cemetery fees should be paid in advance, and that ratepayers using the sealed pan service should be offered a renewal on payment of 7s 6d per quarter in advance.—The question of the construction of sale yards at Cromwell was mentioned, and it was decided that the clerk should write to the secretary of the Tarras Sale Yards Company inquiring if his company would meet a deputation from the Borough Council with a view to discussing the position. Tile Mayor and Crs Partridge and Jolly were appointed a deputation to meet the company. WANAKA Breath of Winter.—Wintry conditions prevailed for the greater part of last week. Rain fell on several occasions, and there was a fresh " skiff ” of snow on the surrounding mountains. Lady Galway Guild.—The monthly meeting of the Lady Galway Guild was held last week. The members handed in skull caps, bandages and hold-alls for soldiers’ parcels, and a donation of a parcel of hussifs, made by the pupils of the Wanaka District High School, was also received. Town Planning.—The recently-formed Ratepayers’ Committee carried out an inspection of areas in Wanaka which would be suitable for building sites. As a result of the inspection, it was unanimously decided to advise the Lake County Council that the area comprising the golf links and other high land on the northern side of Wanaka should be regarded as suitable for building sites. It was also decided that pending the bringing down of a town plan for Wanaka the Lake County Council should be asked to submit all applications for /building permits to the committee before they were granted. Howard, dental nurse, has been paying her periodical visit to Wanaka. —Messrs J. Ironside and W. Gillespie left last week for a northern military camp. ROXBURGH , ■ Borough Council.—The monthly meeting was held on Thursday last. There were present the Mayor (Mr F. A. Laloli), Crs T. Waigth, W. Henderson, F. Vercoe, G. N. Jeffery, G. Charlton, J. H. Martin,, J. C. Gilchrist, and W. Haughton. A motion of condolence was adopted, expressing the council’s sympathy m the following cases of bereavement:—Mr A. Burton (town clerk), on the recent death of his father;- Mrs J. Brown, on the death of her husband, a highly respected member of the community; Mr and Mrs J. George, on receipt of information of their son Lloyd’s death.—The picture report stated that the attendances during the past month had been good. The Hall Committee’s report stated that most of the windows had . been fitted with blinds in conformity with the Lighting Restrictions. The Reserves Committee reported that the rabbiter had caught 532 rabbits in the past two months. It was decided that the provision of cooking arrangements at the motor camp should be considered at a later date. The question of the health camp water charges was held over till a later meeting.—The council appointed the following Central Committee for the Roxburgh area of the E.P.S.: Messrs T. Waigth (chairman), F. E. Vercoe (deputy chairman), B. M. Jeffery, T. Hayes. N. Harliwich, G. Charlton, W. J. Henderson. W. Compton, Dr R. Gilmour, J. H. Martin, G. N. JCTfery, J. R. Waigth, C. P. Hainsworth, R. Borroman, A, Murphy, S. Wingfield, D. Balllie, and H. McMahon.

Soldiers Entertained.—On Thursday evening last a social was held in the Roxburgh Dance Hall, the guests of honour being Privates A, Holmes and P. Dunlay. Cards were played in the supper room and dancing was held bn the main floor, music for which was supplied by Gordon’s Orchestra. In making a presentation to each of the guests the Mayor (Mr F. A. Laloli), on behalf of the district, extended best wishes to each of the recipients, wishing them both Godspeed and a safe return to Roxburgh. The president of the Roxburgh Returned Services’ Association (Mr A. Burton) also made a presentation. Other presentations were to be forwarded to Privates R. Kerr, M. Dunlay and C. Adcock, who had not been home for a social. Social at Coal Creek.—A social evening was held at the Coal Creek Hall on Friday, dhe guest of honour being, Mrs John Reid (nee Howell). A representative gathering was present and the evening was taken up with cards and dancing. Mrs J. Pearson supplied the music for the dancing. Mr W. J. Manuel, in making a presentation on behalf of those present and the residents of Coal Creek Flat, extended best wishes for the future and trusted that Pilot Officer Reid would soon return to Roxburgh. Mr F. J. Tamblyn suitably replied on behalf of Mrs Reid. School Concert.—The annual school concert of the Roxburgh District High School was held in the Town Hall. There was a very large attendance and the programme provided by the children was of high merit. The chairman of the School Committee (Mr R. G. Glendenning), in thanking those present for their support, said he was sure that everyone had been pleased with the performance given by the children, and the teaching staff deserved great credit. The concert had proved one of the best financially to date and had exceeded last year's takings by £4. Plunket Society—The twenty-eighth annual meting of the Plunket Society was held last week, there being a good attendance of members. Mrs John Bennetts was re-elected president and the committee was returned to office. The balance sheet showed the finances to be in a sound position. Nurse Riddle, in the course of her remarks, gave some helpful suggestions to the committee. She suggested that a room be opened at Miller’s Flat as soon as possible so that mothers would be able to bring their older children. The committee decided to have a room arranged for at once. Presenting the annual report Mrs Bennetts stated that with all the calls

made upon the society at the present time the work has gone on smoothly, thanks to the loyal support of the committee. The sheep sales still continued to be a source of revenue and they were grateful for the opportunity of catering for these sales. They also appreciated the work done by members of the committee at these sales. Personal.—Sister Clark, of Dunedin. Is relieving Sister Sim. of the Roxburgh Hospital, who is on annual holidays.—The Rev. G. Becklngsale returned to Roxburgh on Saturday after attending the Methodist Synod in Dunedin. —The following soldiers are at present on leave! H. Tough, F. Cahill, R, Shand, E. Moore, R. Harper, G. Bowden and R. Hume. Ettrlck Fruitgrowers’ Association.—At the annual meeting of the Ettrlck Fruitgrowers’ Association the resident orchard instructor. Mr S. Frew, was presented with a substantial cheque as a token of the goodwill of the growers of the Ettrlck, Miller’s Flat and Dumbarton orchardists. Mr Frew has received notice to enter camp and was notified that he would in all probability be transferred to another district when hostilities ceased. Men’s Golf.—A medal round was held on Saturday afternoon under ideal conditions, the course being in good order The best cards returned' were B. F. Anderson 65, G. A. de Lautour 74, M. Penney 76.
