Mr D. C. Cameron returned yesterday from a visit to Blenheim. Mr J. A. Hanan, M.L.C., returned from Christchurch by the express yesterday. Major C. R. G. Bassett. V.C., has been appointed commanding officer, Northern Divisional Signals, with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Cr L. J. T. Ireland, who attended in uniform, was welcomed by the Mayor, Mr A. H. Allen, at the meeting of the City Council last night. Passengers from the north by air yesterday included the following:— Miss M. Foster from Auckland, Miss A. Menzies. Mrs C. Bakewell and Dr M. Bakewell from Wellington. Mr J. Geerin was appointed by the City Council last night to succeed the late Mr E. C. Reynolds as valuer in respect of the renewal of corporation leaseholds.

Flight Lieutenant R. W. Baker, a member of the New Zealand Spitfire Squadron, which took part in the attack on the German warships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, is an old boy of John McGlashan College. He received his training in New Zealand, and left for Great Britain as a pilot officer in February, 1941. Mr E. A. Selman, who has been serving with the home defence forces since December last, has been released from further military service to take over the position of district man-power officer for Dunedin. The present manpower officer, Mr A. J. Haub, will return to his duties with the Labour Department. Mr Selman has held the position of registrar of social security and war pensions at Dunedin for the past three years, and has been seconded for his new duties for an indefinite period. He has had a wide experience of employment problems dating back to 1930, when the Unemployment Board was constituted. He was one of the first officers to be attached to the board’s staff and was employed at the head office and later at the district office of the Labour Department (Employment Division), Wellington, until his appointment to the Social Security Department in 1939.
