CIVILIANS IN ARMY

RATES OF PAY COMPARED The question raised at the annual meeting of the Dunedin Returned Services’ Association comparing the rates of pay of civilians employed as clerks by the Army Department with men in khaki doing similar work was the subject of a report by. the; War Emergency Committee at a meeting of the association’s executive last night. ' The report stated that the difference in pay was not as disadvantageous to soldiers as was stated. In fact, when it was remembered that the pay and dependents’ allowances were free of social and national security tax and that the soldiers were found and clothed, the rates of pay of soldiers compared very favourably. It was stated .that a man in the service with a wife and two children received £.5 Is 6d net a week, .which, was eouivalent to £5 16s in civilian life. 'ln addition to this pay, th« soldier was clothed and kept, and had certain other concessions, such as the purchase of tobacco at special rates.
