BRITISH BY-ELECTION
A CONSERVATIVE SUCCESS (Rec. 8.30 p.m,) LONDON, May 9. The Putney by-election resulted as follows!-^ Mr Linsteed (Conservative) .. 8788 Mr Ackworth (Independent) .. 2939 Twenty-three per cent, of the electorate voted. The by-election was to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr Marcus Samuel. The Sunday Times in a leading article comments that the "whole question of the choice' of candidates needs to be reconsidered. The prime object ought to be to secure men whose opinions and personality bring a new quality to the House of Commons." Mr Linsteed is secretary of the Pharmaceutical Association.
