SPELL FOR ROYAL LANCER
(Special) INVERCARGILL, May 9. The postponement of the Dunedin Jockey Club's winter meeting from May 30 to June 27 may cause several Southland trainers to revise their plans for winter racing in the north. The original arrangement was to race at Oamaru and remain in the north for the Dunedin meeting, but in view of the long interval that will now occur between the two meetings the trainers concerned are contemplating cancelling the whole programme. Apart from the fact that train- > ing is practically out of the question in Southland in the middle of winter, the cost of keeping horses in training for several weeks with the prospect of only one day's racing is not warranted under the j circumstances, they say. Noko and Anglo-French, who have engagements at the Auckland winter meeting, are being worked the reverse way at Invercargill. Both horses may be sent north next week with a view to making their first appearance in the North Island at the Waikato meetin&on May 23. AngloFrench will not fulfil his steeplechase engagement at the Oamaru meeting. Royal Lancer has been sent home to his owner for a spell. The Irish Lancer gelding has practically recovered from his leg trouble, and on his return to training he will be given a special preparation for the New Zealand Cup. /
