FREEZING INDUSTRY

THE AVOIDANCE OF DISPUTES (P.A.) WELLINGTON. May 8. An amendment to the Freezing Industry Emergency Regulations, published with a supplementary Gazette to-night restricts the membership of the Works Efficiency Council to four representatives of the workers’ union and two members of the management, together with the district union secretary. The original regulations provided for a larger membership and the councils were found to be unwieldy. The amendment also provides that when a matter is being considered by the council either side may call evidence and that except in case of emergency 48 hours’ notice must be given before a matter is brought before the council. The National Council, comprising three representatives from each side set up by the original regulations, has its functions altered from the right to “settle any dispute that may arise in the industry ” to “ deal with any matters that may arise affecting the promotion or maintenance of harmonious relations between the employers and the workers in the industry.”
