RICCARTON NOTES

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, May 8. Heavy rain fell during the night and the tracks were easy this morning, when there was a light drizzle. A number of trainers welcomed the opportunity to give their candidates for Ashburton short sprints on the No. 6 grass track. The prospect of soft ground at Ashburton will help A. McAulay's pair. Stabilise and Sir Gundi. The latter had an easy time for a few weeks, but he has been an afternoon visitor to the tracks lately, doing useful work. Mauretania has been working well and she should be suited by the conditions at Ashburton. St. Cloud should be hard to beat in the Ashburton sprint, as she revels in soft going. In these conditions she made an exhibition of a good field over seven furlongs at Riccarton last August. Adina had a stiff neck as a result of his fall while schooling over hurdles yesterday, and V. Lee cancelled his Ashburton engagement, taking the horse back to the West Coast last night. Nuturoa was Injured in the float, on his way here from Blenheim. He was given strong work yesterday, but he was very sore afterwards. ’ He will not be fit to race at Ashburton or at Oamaru. as he will need a spell for a week or two. Additional riding engagements for Ashburton are:—L. J. Ellis. All Night. Heroic Star: I. Walther. Knight Commander: R. J. Mackie, Stormaiong. C. Fox will be on Prince Dolomite if he runs in the Fairfield Handicap. S. Barr left last night for the Egmont meeting, with Erinatlon and Hurry Girl, who are in great order. G. Barr accompanied his father, and he will ride Erination in. his jumping engagements on the trip.
