GRAPES FOR SALE CHINESE PATRIOTIC GESTURE The Chinese residents of North Otago have given 25 large bunches of grapes to the South Hill Women's Institute for sale for the benefit of the All Purposes Appeal. These are the choicest Kakanui grapes, and after being displayed in front of Bulleids, they will be sold by auction on Friday afternoon at 3.30. The whole of the proceeds will be devoted to the Patriotic Fund, and it is confidently anticipated that a very substantial amount will be raised by this fine gesture on the 1 part of the Chinese residents. LABOURERS' UNION The annua! meeting of the Oamaru Labourers' Union was held on Saturday night, the president of the provincial branch, Mr W. Cocking, of Dunedin, presiding. Mr R. Mclntyre. secretary for Otago, was also present. The election of officers resulted:—President, Mr W. Lowrey; vice-president, Mr R. Byerss; secretary, Mr A. G. Amies; executive—Messrs M. T. Gallagher, M. R. McMillan, D. Reilly, E. D. Gillespie, H. Griffiths; delegate to Oamaru Trades Council. Mr D. Lowrey. Mr Amies reported on the case oi' a woman who had been refused one gallon of petrol to enable her to visit her daughter, who was seriously ill in hospital, and the meeting instructed the secretary to take the matter further. Mr Mclntyre discussed the • authority given to Labour Union secretaries by the Minister of Labour, Mr P. C. Webb, to take up any cases of victimisation of scheme 13 workers. In this respect the stand-down week was severely criticised, and the opinion was expressed that all the men should be immediately placed in suitable work. Speaking as the union's delegate to the Federation of Labour, Mr Mclntyre also reported on the recent' conference and. dealing with defence works, he pointed out that in Dunedin workers were' represented on the Air-raid Shelter Committee, which was an important consideration. Mr Amies said that in Oamaru there was only a Trench Committee, and he added that the local authorities had done nothing, notwithstanding the representations as to air-raid shelters made to them. ITEMS OF INTEREST IN AND ABOUT TOWN Awamoko Function. —Mrs Elder won the women's prize and Mr A. McLeod the men's at the euchre and dance held recently in the Awamoko Hall by the Awamoko-Georgetown Women's Institute. Misses I. and J. Geddes, A. Elliot, J. Aitchison, and Mr M. Smart, supplied the music, and Mr McLennan was M.C. Tides.—To-day at Oamaru, high tides will be at 7.14 a.m. and 7.39 p.m. Early Settlers.—The Oamaru Early Settlers' Association held a meeting yesterday which was presided over by Mr G. Gardiner, who paid a tribute to the former president, Mr G. L. Grenfell. Mrs J. Lindsay was added to the Social Committee, and Mesdames Wright, Kelly, and H. Brown were thanked for donations of pictures and photographs for the association's rooms. Mr G. L. Grenfell reported on a visit to a meeting of the Patriotic Controlling Committee, and he was appointed to represent the association in future. Motions of sympathy were passed with the relatives of Miss Gilchrist. PERSONAL Mr and Mrs R. McGillivray, of Oamaru, have received cabled advice that their son, Flight Lieutenant T. C. McGillivray, has been promoted to squadron leader. He has had much varied experience in the R.A.F., both in the training and operational branches. AMUSEMENTS Majestic Theatre.—The comedy-drama " This Thing Called Love," with Rosalind Russell and Melvyn Douglas, will be shown finally to-night at the Majestic. Opera House.—For the change to-night, " Pride and Prejudice " will be screened. It is based on the novel by Jane Austin, and features Greer Garson, Laurence Olivier, Mary Boland. Edna May Oliver, Maureen O'Sullivan, and Ann Rutherford.
