Captain Leonard Robertson, who was recently appointed superintendent \of mercantile marine in Dunedin; has had a long and adventurous career at sea. He was a nautical surveyor of ships for many years and acting supenntendent of mercantile marine in Auckland for the past 12 months. Capfi||h! Robertson, whose grandfather, iatSir, 1 and brother were master mariners, kit Wellington at the age of 20 as second mate of a large barquentine. He passed the examination for foreign' master in Sydney two years later and subsequently returned to New Zeafcuid, -• joining the Patea Shipping Company as mate and master. His next petition was master of the Union Steam, Ship Company's salvage tug Terawhiti.. Later he was officer In charge of the Lake Wakatipu shipping Service, ;<!bn--trolled by the Railways Department, for 12 years. He qualified for veicfa*: ; master, the highest certificate cibtiun-, able in the mercantile marine. He went to Auckland as surveyor of ships in 1928. mm
