THE HOME GUARD
CHANGE TO ARMY CONTROL BENEFICIAL RESULTS EXPECTED “ The change was eagerly sought and will have great advantages,” said the district director of the Home Guard (Colonel A. S. Bruce Smith) yesterday, commenting on the decision to place the organisation under the direct control of the army. “In view of the seriousness of the situation the array is to have corhplete control, and I have not the slightest doubt that the results will be beneficial not only to the Home Guard movement but to the defence of the country generally.” Colonel Bruce Smith added that administration would be simplified, as there would be only two branches of the home defence forces—the territorials and the Home Guard—and the Home Guard would be more or less on a basis of territorial organisation. The movement had been given, specified duties, and would be better equipped and provided for than in the past. District directors, in consequence, would be freer to visit and inspect the units in training in the various districts.
