GRANGE'S COLLAPSE OLD BOYS BEAT KAIKORAI The feature of the Otago Cricket Association's grade championship matches on Saturday was the defeat of Grange by Dunedin. Dunedin batted first and scored 147 runs for six wickets, and G. J. Robertson and E. Ledgerwood bowled so effectively that Grange was dismissed for only 40 runs. In its second innings, Grange had scored 79 for seven wickets when time was called. At Bishopscourt, Old Boys maintained their lead in the competition by beating Kaikorai. L. J. Groves (Old Boys) and C. F. w. Allcott (Kaikorai) were outstanding in this match with six wickets for 36 runs and five for 43 respectively. At Carisbrook, AlbionY.M.G.A. beat Carisbrook in a game which produced the two best batting performances of the day. S. Duncan (AlbionY.M.C.A.), with 80 runs, and R. O. Talbot (Kaikorai), with 71, were the successful batsmen. At Logan Park, University beat North'East Valley. At the North Ground, Grange collapsed completely against Dunedin, replying to the Tonga Park team's 147 for six wickets with a meagre 40. For Dunedin, T. Rodgerson, with a bright 61 not out, and G. T. Robertson (32) were the oustanding batsmen. T. Freeman took three of Dunedin's Wickets for 35 runs, and A. R. Knight took two for 30. Grange lost its first six wickets for 36 runs, and was all out for 40 runs, J. Stephenson (14) being the only batsman to reach double figures. Robertson bowled well on a wicket that was to his likirig, as his five for 16 showed. Ledgerwood gave him able support by taking four wickets for 17 runs. Grange's second innings was an improvement, and at " stumps" the board showed seven i Wickets for 79 runs, of which <I. Tilbury scored 22 not out The game between Old Boys and Hair korai produced some good cricket, the fielding and bowling being of a high standard. Kaikorai batted first and Was all out for 85 at 3.35 p.m. Groves was in his top form and was mainly responsible for Kaikorai's unimpressive total. He spUh the ball cleverly to take six wickets for 36 runs. He bowled 9.6 overs, of which three were maidens, and at one stage he had three wickets for' no runs, The best scorer for Kaikorai was R. Fea, who hit out freely for 26 runs. AllCott, the next highest scorer, was bowled by Groves for 18 runs. V. J. Leader and U. A. C. MeAriey, each with two for 20, also bowled Well for Old Boys. Leader bowled five maiden overs In 14 and McArley bowled three maiden overs in nine. Old Boys' total was 111. *G. H. Mills and E. HarraWay were the best batsmen with 33 and 31 respectively. Mills played good strokes, but did not appear comfortable against Allcott, whose figures were five wickets for 43 runs. G. McGregor took two wickets for 33 runs, and K. Burke, who did not bowl until late in Old Boys' innings, secured the excellent figures of two for one. Kaikorai's fielding was particularly smart. Carisbrook batted first against AlbionY.M.C.A. and totalled 165. Talbot played a chaneeless innings of 71 and he and J. Fraser, who scored 32, gave the side a start of 75 for the first wicket. J. Frood bowled unchanged for Albion-Y.M.C.A. to take six wickets for 54 runs, and L. Smith took four wickets for .66 runs. Albion-Y.M.C.A. replied with 173 for seven wickets. Duncan played bright cricket for 80 runs', and W. Ditchfield was not out for 39 runs. Bowling for Carisbrook, Talbot took four for 59 and J. Nimmo three for 59. University scored a comfortable Win over North-East Valley at Logan Park. The Valley Side batted first and scored 86 runs (R. Peart 26, G. Knowles 27). F. K., Rennie took four for 16, J. H, Gilkison two for 18, and C. D. Mowat two for 24. University replied with 149, of which C. D. ToOmey made 42 by free batting. A. W. Sinclair scored 38 in a successful "come back," and O, Toomey made 20. J. Cullen bowled steadily to take four for 57 and A. Riach and R. Peart each finished up With two for 16. Old Boys with 36 points now have a substantial lead in the competition. THE LOWER GRADES Intermediate Grade.—Green Island 73 (F. Barnes 19, A. Berry, jun., 16, O'Neill 13; McKay three for three, T. The end of the second day's play in the Centennial Cup cricket match at Eden Park, on Saturday, between Auckland and Wellington representative teams, saw the home team in a strong position with a lead Of 162 funs On the first innings, Wellington thus having failed to save a follow-on. The Canterbury Cricket Association's competition was continued on Saturday. When the feature was ah innings of 101, (retired) by the Riccarton left-hander. G. A. Bull It was his third successive century, in the last two of which he has retired. Bull also took five wickets for 33 runs.
