MAN-POWER COMMITTEE

SITTING AT BALCLUTHA A sitting of the Southland Man-power Committee to deal with appeals for exemption from territorial service was held' at the. courthouse, Balclutha, on Thursday. The committee consisted of Messrs E. H. Murney (chairman), D. Stalker and J. Cockburn, with Mr Hinchey as secretary. W. Luke, manager of the South Otago Freezing Company, appealed for several employees, whose cases were dealt wi in as follows: , William Shaw (slaughterhouse assistant) : To return -to camp on June 30 and to join the Home Guard in the meantime. G. B. Butterworth (sales clerk): Dismissed as at June 30, and to be made available for military training in the months of July to November inclusive, and to join the Home Guard. S. P,; Gilllgan and G. L. Moffat (clerical staff), for whom Mr E. E. Barnett appeared: Adjourned to June 30, the reservists to put in three months' training subsequently. L M. Houliston (butcher): Dismissed as at June 30 and to be made available for military training in the period July to November inclusive, and to join the Home Guard. J. H. C. Hunt (skin department), H. Hurring and A. Jack (woolpressers), T. J. Kean (sausage skin department). W. M. Knight (skin puller), Thomas Quill (fireman), Eric Yorston. J. Houlahan and A. G. Pope (pelt washers) were similarly dealt with. Daniel Brocket (solo butcher): Decision reserved. J- A. Aitkenhead, J. B. Edwards, L J. Kirby, DA K. McLeod and F. O'Hara: Dismissed at June 30. to do territorial training in the period July to November inclusive, and to join, the Home Guard at once. , , . D. L. Cochrane, Milton, appealed for by his father (James Cochrane, sheep farmer), for whom Mr Rutherford appeared.—Decision reserved. J. Mr Kelly said the appellant was engaged in manufacturing cheese crates and his employer _would be seriously inconvenienced if deprived of this man's services.-The chairman said, the committee had. no jurisdiction in this case, which was for overseas service. . G. M. Blackmore was appealed for by Oliver Gray, farmer. Lovell's Flat.—Withdrawn as at April 30, the reservist to serve during the months of May, June, and R.Donden was appealed for by R. H. Parker Lovell's Flat, chaff cutter proprietor! who said the job was one for an expert.—Appeal dismissed as at May 31 the reservist to go into camp for the months of June, July, and August. J H. Henderson, secretary of the Kaitangata Coal Company; appealed for toe following employees: E. Hale, John McKinney, G. Maitland, W. G. Uren, J. Green and G. Hosklns (truckers), and F. Keach, C. H. Forrest, and John Stephenson (screen hands).— Adjourned to September 30 in each case. ■ ! , L G. Landrebe, baker.—Adjourned sine die, conditional on remaining in the Home Guard. The Milton Vigilance Committee ap-. pealed for S. McNoe, shearer and threshing mill worker.—Withdrawn as at May 31, the reservist to do three months' training between 1 June and October. The Balclutha Fire Brigade (Superintendent McCutcheon) appealed for A. B. Mclntyre. A. H. Low, and R. D. Stewart.— Adjourned sine die. Oliver Rusbatch, farmer, Kaihiku.—Adjourned sine die. the-reservist to continue in the Home Guard. W H, Crawford, orchardist. Coal Creek, asked for time, till April 30.—Granted. The Balclutha Vigilance Committee appealed for A. C. Bishop, who asked for time, till April 30—Granted. F. Dobson, orchardist', and sheep farmer, Ettrick, asked for time.—Adjourned to May 30, the reservist to join the Home Guard. The next sitting at Balclutha will deal chiefly with married men who have been called up.
