BOMB SHELTERS

TO THE EDITOR Sir,—The City Council is to be commended for its foresight in having bomb-splinter shelters erected m various parts of Dunedin, We now trust the council to see to it that the shelters,, which have cost the ratepayers a considerable sum of money, may be in a condition to render helpful service in the event of our being subjected to the treatment from the air which so many of our relatives and friends elsewhere have had to suffer. Take as an instance the shelters recently built in the Museum Park. At least half the children attending the adjacent school go to and' ? from school'on the top' of, or in, the trenches. Then, again, battles are waged every afternoon and evening, the ammunition used being pieces broken from the turfs of which the shelters are formed. How long this ammunition durmp will last depends on how long the children are allowed full sway. Pieces of turf and earth are spread over neighbouring footpaths and are very objectionable during wet weather. No one enjoys more than I do seeing my own and other people’s children at play, but just in case trouble comes I think that someone in authority. should take a hand to save the trenches from the children for the children.—l am, etc., Splinter. Dunedin, February 5.
