NAVY LEAGUE

OTAGO BRANCH MEETING The monthly meeting of the executive of the Navy League (Otago branch) was held on Wednesday, the president, Mr J. Sutherland Ross, being in the chair. The president reported that a model of the Golden Hind had been made and presented to the Sea Cadets Corps by Dr J. B. Dawson, and the secretary was asked to thank Dr Dawson for his gift. Permission was granted to the naval officer-in-charge for the Naval Auxiliary Patrol to use the Sea Cadets’ headquarters for one night a week for training purposes. A letter had been received from the Navy Secretary advising that the regulations governing sea cadet corps are now ready for approval by the Government. It was reported that steps were being taken to ensure that the corps was used as a unit with the E.P.S, organisations. Two letters expressing thanks for goods and- tnoney forwarded for the comforts fund were received from Sir Sydney Freemantle. Acknowledgments were also received from a naval shore station to which sports gear had been provided. Mrs Gerald Ferguson was elected to the executive. Mrs Ross presented the wool report and read letters of thanks which had been received for Christmas parcels and comforts sent to sea cadets overseas and to minesweepers in New Zealand. Donations received for the month totalled £3l 5s 6d. A letter was received from the Patriotic Board advising that it was sending 801 b of wool with which it required 100 pairs of sea boot stockings to be knitted for the navy. The total amount of wool spun to the end of December was over 411 b. Donations had been received from the 0.8.H.5. of' £ls 6s 6d and £1 10s from the Arthur Street Junior Red Cross. As the secretary is unable to be in attendance every day, it was resolved that the office should be open on Wednesday and Friday of each week from 10.30 a.m to 12, and that members of the Women’s Auxiliary should take turns in being in attendance.
