Mr F. L. Hitchens, secretary of the Dunedin Manufacturers' Association, left for Wellington yesterday to attend a conference of secretaries of the various associations.

Mrs O. A. Wahrlich, of Highgate, has received cable advice from her husband in 'the Middle East that he is safe and well. : ; ; ; Now on three months' leave, Mr J. W. Townsend, senior surveyor of ships, senior inspector, of machinery, and senior examiner of marine engineers, at Auckland, has retired from the Marine Department. \

Mr C B. Rout, district manager at invercargill of the Perpetual Trustees and Agency Co., Ltd. for many years past, has intimated that he wishes.to be relieved of his "duties. Mr D.;R. Anderson, of the company's Dunedin staff, has been appointed to succeed him as manager end will take up his duties on Monday. *f l The ,Rev.
