THEFT OF FIFTY POUNDS

ONLY FIVE SHILLINGS LEFT PAINTER SENT TO PRISON (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 4 While painting the roof with the owner of a house at Devonport on November 24 last, William Henry Glanville .aged 37, a painter, descended from the roof, removed the ladder, entered a room, and stole a £SO note. He returned to the roof and continued to work until finishing time, and then disappeared. Glanville to-day pleaded guilty in the Police Court to the theft of £SO. , . ,_, . The police said the complainant, Walter Cyril Beaumont, the owner of the note, had since gone to Australia. Glanville was not located until yesterday, when he was arrested in the city by a detective. The accused said he had been working in the New Plymouth district, and had cashed the £SO note. When arrested, he had only ss. Glanville also pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to enrol. He told the magistrate he would like to enter the army. " Your conduct did not show that you wanted to enter the army," said the magistrate, Mr J. Morling, sentencing him to six months' imprisonment for theft and one month's imprisonment for failing to enrol.
