BURNSIDE SALE

AN IMPROVED TONE RISE IN CATTLE PRICES There was an Improved tone in all classes excepting fat sheep at the Burnside sale yesterday. With another small entry in the beef section there was a decided improvement on last week's sale. Fat pigs, which were also in short supply, met with keen competition. Lambs, with last week's improved schedule and butchers' competition, were spirited throughout. Fat Cattle.—The entry in this section comprised 246 compared with 275 last week. There was a dearth of the extra prime and prime quality, the pennlngs being made up mostly of prime medium and medium sorts, with a smaller display of lighter and plainer descriptions. With the limited number of ox the market opened under keen competition •at prices 25s td, 30s ahead of last week's ruling rates, and this was fully maintained throughout, being exceeded in places. Cows and heifers made up a large proportion of the yarding and also met a ready sale at prices in vendors' favour by 2~os to 255. Quotations: Extra prime heavy bullocks. £2O 7s 6d; prime, £l6 7s 6d to £l7 12s 6d; medium, £l2 7s 6d to £l4 2s 6d; light, from £11; extra prime cows and heifers, to £ll 17s 6d; prime, £7 17s 6d W £9; medium, £5 12s 6d to £6 12s 6d; light, from £4 7s 6d. Fat Sheep.—The fat sheep entry comprised 2500. Wethers were again in short supply, light aged ewes providing the main part of the yarding. Although the market Was irregular it showed little change on the average from that of a

RANGE OF PRICES The following quotations per 1001 b for beef and per lb for mutton and pigs are supplied, with a comparison with last week's prices, by our special representative at yesterday's Burnsidc stock sale:—

week ago. With the over-supply the sale was a dragging one and towards the finish sales were difficult to effect. Noticeable is the scarcity of good butchers' wethers. Quotations: Extra prime wethers, to 28s 9d; prime, 24s to 26s 3d; medium, 22s Sd to 23s 6d; light, from 20s; extra prime young ewes, to 20s; prime, lis 9d to 13s; medium, 10s to lis; light, from <9s. Fat Lambs.—The entry in the fat lamb section numbered 1475. There was a fair showing of .quality lambs, although there was a distinct falling-off compared with the previous week. With the improved schedule of last week and butchers' competition, there Was a brisk sale throughout, prices being well up to exporters' valuep, and in many cases this was exceeded, especially in the heavier grades. Quotations: Extra prime heavy lambs, to 28s 6d; prime, 24s 9d to 26s 9d; medium, 23s 9d to 24s 9d; light, from 20s.

Fat Pigs.—The yarding was smaller, than usual, about 165 being offered. In the porker section the yarding was the smallest for some time, while baconers were also in limited numbers. Consequently values took a sharp" rise in all classes; this being particularly noticeable {in the porker section, the rise being more noticeable as the sale progressed. Best baconers showed anj improvement of 5s to 6s a head; white; the handy weights showed an increase' of 10s to 12s a head. Store Cattle,—The store cattle showing was made up principally of ordinary class, there being no lines of good colours. With the improved value in the fat cattle sale graziers were in a buying mood, with the result that all classes sold readily at slightly increased values. Good three and four-year-old bullocks sold up to £ll -Ms; three-year-olds, up to £9 6s; i and two to two and a-half -year-olds, £7; 5s to £8 ss. Fresh cows also met with fair competition at prices ranging from' £2 12s to £2 18s.

Dairy Cows.—The yarding in the dairy section was small, but included a few good class cows and heifers. ■ For the good class there was a strong demand, but backward and late springers created little interest. The top price was £ll 2s 6d.

ADDINGTON MARKET GENERAL EASING OF VALUES (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 4. There were heavier entries in some sections at Addington to-day and this resulted in an easing of values in some of the major classes, with the exception of store lambs, values for which were generally improved. . Although smaller than at recent markets, the entry of store lambs, numbering 7100 head, was a large one. The penning mostly comprised medium and rape sorts with a larger showing of small and backward. Values for the better lambs were unchanged, but their scarcity caused a demand for the next class, which improved Is to Is 6d a 'head. Best lambs made 19s to 25s Bd, rape lambs 16s 6d to 19s, and medium and small 13s to 15s 6d. There was an entry of 2700 head of fat lambs. The export schedule remained unchanged, a large, proportion going to exporters at schedule prices, There was little quotable variation in the whole market. Heavy brought 25s 6d to 275, medium 23s 6d to 255, and light down to 22s 6d. There was an entry of about 3500 head of fat sheep. There was a substantial increase in the entry'of wethers. Wethers, at the opening, were approximately a shilling a head cheaper and the price fell another 6d later. Prime young ewes maintained their values, but over-fat sorts were hard to quit. Exporters operated freely for light-weight ewes, maintaining values near the schedule. Extra prime wethers made 26s to 31s, medium to light 20s to 25s 6d, young ewes to 24s 7d, others to 17s, and export to lis 6d. There was an entry of 600 fat cattle and a general easing in prices. Best-quality steers made 37s 6d to 40s per 1001 b, medium to good 35s to 375, ordinary to 34s 6d, and inferior down to 265.
