NOTES FROM INVERCARGILL

PREPARATIONS FOR WINTON (Special) INVERCARGILL, Feb. 3. On the Invercargill track this morning, Desert Maid and Filibeg reeled off half a mile in 52 4-ssec, a smart gallop under the conditions. Desert Maid was , going well within herself at the finish, but Filibeg had to be shaken up. Bantas and Hotch Potch ran five furlongs in Jmin ssec, the last four in 52 2-ssec. Bantas was doing It nicely at the finish, but Hotch Potch was in one of her lazy moods. Crinkle ran right away from Hollyford over the last couple of furlongs of five to record lmin 5 2-ssec, the last four in 53 l-ssec. This was the second best effort over the distance, and Crinkle could have improved on the time. Recall ran five furlongs in lmin 6 3-ssec. Top Spin took lmin 7 l-ssec, the last four in 54 4-3 sec.

Royal Chorus was going better than Princess Gainsborough at the end of five furlongs in lmin 5 4-ssec, the last four in 53sec. Royal Chorus shaped very well, and will be at his best for the Winton meeting. Spanish Lad went away slowly from the mile and a-quarter post and was picked up by Melodist near the mile, which was left behind in lmin 50 4-ssee, the last four in 54 4-ssec. Both were running on.

iWaitoru and Irish Ruler took lmin 22sec to run six furlongs, the last four in 54sec. Irish Ruler was lame.

Judy O'Grady and Elvena took lmin 20sec to run six furlongs, the last four in 54sec.

Anglo-Irish moved away slowly from the mile and a-quarter post and came home the last seven in company with True Range in lmin 36 2-ssec, the last four in 56seo. Anglo-Irish was doing It well within himself.

Royal Brief beat Gipsy Minstrel comfortably over five furlongs in lmin 7sec. the last four in 53 3-ssec. Batsham ran six furlongs in lmin 20 2-ssec, the last four in 53 3-ssec. He appreciated the sting out of the going, and' worked welil.

Wild Career was doing it much better than Sing Sing and Aspire at the end of a mile in lmin' 50 3-ssec. the last four in 55 2-ssec. W. F. Ellis has been engaged to ride Chop Suey, Spanish Lad, Filibeg, Symbol, and Melodist at Winton on Saturday. Ellis will also have the mount on Marquee if the Trial Stakes is run in divisions and the gelding is in a different division to Chop Suey. Other riding engagements are: K.
