GREEN ISLAND BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Green Island Borough Council, held last night, was attended by the Mayor (Mr G. A. Orange) and Crs. T. Mason, F. Burgess, D. Copeland, J. Callery, B. Rennie, T. McAhan, T. Robson and J. Boomer. The Works Committee recommended that the plans and specifications as submitted by Mr F. J. Williams for the tarsealing of the portion of the Kaikorai Valley Road between the foot of Short street and the main highway be approved, and be submitted to the Main Highways Board.—Carried.

A petition was received from the occupiers of Government houses in Mulford street asking that lawns be laid out in front of their houses. They agreed to keep the lawns tidy.—lt was decided to accede to the request as soon as labour was available. There was a lengthy discussion on finance, gas and sewerage problems arising from the cutting back of the bank to the boundaries of properties in Scotland street, the erecting of > stone walls at the boundaries and the constructing of concrete entrance was decided to proceed with a portion of the work.

It was decided that all long grass in the vicinit/ of footpaths in the borough should be cut immediately. The Water, 'Lighting and Drainage Committees recommendation that the 400-gallon water tank in Dee street for the use of the medical section of the E.P.S. should be sandbagged was agreed to. It was decided to make a donation of £1 Is to the New Zealand Surf Life Saving Association. Building permits issued during tne month amounted to £21,310.
