OBITUARY

MR THOMAS TOMKINS The death occurred at Brighton on Wednesday, of Mr Thomas Tomkins, a well-known resident of Green Island. Mr Tomkins was born at Walsall, England, in 1874, and 32 years ago he arrived in Sydney, proceeding to New Zealand four years later to take, over the management of Bayley and Sons' tannery at Green Island. The business was suosequently disposed of to a company of which Mr Tomkins was appointed managing director, and up to the time of his death he remained on the directorate. He took an active interest in public affairs, serving for some years on the Green Island Borough Council, and holding the office of Mayor for a term.- His other interests included the Green Island School Committee, with which he was associated for 14 years, and the Foresters' Lodge, while he was also a prominent Freemason. He is survived by his widow, one son and two daughters. MR H. A. FOREMAN (P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 29. The death is reported of Mr H. A. Foreman, of Tikorangi, near Waitara, at the age of 61. He was the third son of the late Mr J. W. Foreman a pioneer of the Tikorangi settlement, and Mrs Foreman, New Plymouth, and was actively associated with the district's progress. At the time of his death he was chairman of the Clifton County Council and a member of Taranaki local bodies and director of local firms. The deceased at one time took an active part in cricket, and played in matches when the Foreman family fielded a full eleven. MR E. DYE, M.L.C. The death has occurred at Auckland of Mr Edward Dye,*M.L.C., at the age of 63. The son of a building contractor, Mr Dye was born at Timaru, but went at the age of four years with his parents to Tasmania, and was educated at La Trobe School. At the age of 12 he entered a solicitor's office, but three years later joined his father in the building trade. He first became associated with mining when he went to Mount Lyell at 17 years of age, and four years later he came to New Zealand. He settled at Waihi, where he remained in touch with the mining industry until his appointment to the Upper House.
