STRIKERS CHARGED

MORE WESTFIELD MEN BEFORE COURT (P.A.) AUCKLAND. Jan. 29.. As a sequel to the stoppage of work at the Westfleld Freezing Works on January 15, 63 mutton slaughtermen were charged in the Police Court today that, being party to a strike, they partially discontinued employment, contrary to the regulations. They pleaded guilty, and the magistrate, Mr J. H. Luxford, ordering them to come up for sentence if called on within a year, said that they would not be called if the work proceeded in a right and proper way. The magistrate said it appeared to him that the men had good cause for complaint concerning the provision of transport for workers, but had spoilt it by taking direct action. Anomalies must, be ironed out.

TRANSPORT FOR WORKERS CONFERENCE OF PARTIES tP.A.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 29. The conference called by the Minister of Labour, Mr P. C. Webb, to consider the provision of sufficient transport for the Westfleld freezing workers appointed a sub-committee to investigate the details and endeavour to solve the problem. Sir Ernest Davis presided.

The conference was attended by the Transport Authority, Mr E. J. Phelan, representatives of the workers, the, bus companies and the railways. All expressed agreement with Mr Webb that it was a most urgent problem, and offered full co-operation.
