NOTES FROM INVERCARGILL

(Special) INVERCARGILL, Jan. 29. Interest in training operations at Invercargill has quickened in view of the Winton meeting on Saturday week, and several brilliant gallops were recorded at headquarters this morning, when all the work was done on the course proper SO feet out from the rails. The weather and track conditions were perfect. Desert Maid and the two-year-old Carolyn set the main for the morning over a sprint distance when they reeled oft five furlongs in lmin 3 l-ssec. The pace was a cracker from the start, the first furlong being run in 11 4-ssec, two in 23 3-ssec, and three in 36 l-ssec. Desert Maid was in front at the finish and doing it well, but Carolyn was weakening a bit. Carolyn is to make her next appearance in the Champagne Stakes at the Dunedin Jockey Club's cup meeting, and the consistent daughter of Paper Money promises to be hard to beat. Since tne tracks have dried up. Desert Maid has been working exceptionally well, and if she races as well with the colours up she should be worth following in her forthcoming engagements. Spanish Lad and Melodist ran .seven furlongs in the fast time of lmin 31sec, the last four in 53 l-ssec. Spanish Lad was running on well at the finish, and he looks a fitter horse than when he annexed the Invercargill Cup. Melodist is improving and she has only to repeat her track form to reach the winning list.

Heidelberg and Sailing Lady were finishing on nicely at the end of a mile in lmin 48 l-ssec, the first half in 54sec, and the last four in 54 l-ssec. Sailing Lady carried over 9st and appeared to be doing it the better at the finish. Heidelberg has never looked better, and if he strikes a dry track at Winton he will make a bold bid to repeat his Winton Cup success of last year.

Anglo-Irish beat True Range over a mile in lmin 49 4-ssec, and was under a good hold all the way. The Sir Simper gelding is looking well and working well. No novice at headquarters has been working better than Judy O'Grady and the half-sister to Spendthrift will command attention the next time she is produced

The best six this morning went to the credit of Aspire and Irish Ruler, who completed the distance in lmin 18 2-ssec, the last four in 53 3-ssec. Aspire was not fully extended, but Irish Ruler could not have done any better. No fault can be found with the condition of Noko, and he is being prepared for the hurdle race on the Dunedin programme. He gave a polished display over four flights of hurdles this morning. Gold Robe is among the workers again, after a short time off with a bruised foot, and he schooled well over five hurdles this morning.

Southern Sail has recovered from an attack of kidney trouble, and should be fit when required to race again. Secret Flight is being brought to the track again, after resting since the New Year meetings, but she is only in light exercise, and will require building up again, having lightened up a bit.
