BALCLUTHA Magistrate's Court.—At a sitting of the Magistrate's Court at Balclutha yesterday, before Mr H. J. Dixcn, S.M., William Kelly, farmer, of Kaitangata, was charged with being found in possession of 16 sheepskins from which the ears had been removed. The defendant pleaded ignorance of the law relating to the removal of the ears from lambs and sheep. The magistrate said the circumstances were susoicious and convicted the defendant, who was fined £ls, with costs (10s). N. J. R. Callaghan, Tomahawk, employed as a clerk by Dunedin City Council, was charged with purchasing two gallons of Plume petrol without being the holder of-a consumer's licence. A fine of £5 was imposed, with costs (13s). E. E. Hair, draper, Kaitangata, was charged with, on November 17, selling a pair of boy's golf hose, size 3, at the price of 4s, being 9d more than the maximum permitted by the Price Order No. 44. The evidence showed that the defendant had not received a copy of the order and in the circumstances he was convicted and ordered to pay solicitor's fee (£2 2s). James Alexander Borthwick, truck driver, for operating a heavy lorry at a speed exceeding 25 miles an hour, was fined 40s with costs (lis). Arnold Richard Hunter, charged with riding an unlighted bicycle in John street, was fined ss, with cost's (10s). The Hokonul Sawmilling Company, charged with operating a motor lorry at Milton on November 27 with a load extending more than four feet behind the body of the vehicle, was fined 30s, with costs (10s). Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the case Wilson Elliott, Ltd. v. Richard J. McLean, Waikawa, claim £2 lis 2d, with costs 25s 6d; W. Hastings, Balclutha v. W. H. Smith, claim £lO 10s on a ludgment summons. An order was made for payment in instalments of 15s weekly. River Steamer Service—ln the discussion following the reading of a communication from the Director of Transport (Mr Laurenson) at the meeting of Clutha County Council, Cr A. V. King, of Clvdevale, said a great, saving in petrol could' be effected if the lorries that now supplied the Clutha Valley were taken off the roads and the old river steamer service resumed. The steamer Clutha was intact, and if the River Trust liked there was nothing to prevent the steamer running Othar members agreed, and it was decided to approach the Minister of Transport on the subject.
