NO BIG-SCALE FIGHTING SKIRMISHES ON PENINSULA RUGBY, Jan. 26. A United States War Department communique states: In the Philippine theatre, fighting on the Batan Peninsula is confined to relatively unimportant skirmishes on the west coast and in the vicinity of Subic Bay. Delayed reports advise that the city of Cebu, in the Philippines, suffered from an intense air raid on Wednesday last. Eighteen enemy bombers participated. One small interisland boat was sunk in Cebu Harbour. No other serious damage was inflicted. If has been determined that a large Japanese tanker, which was set on fire by our bombers last Tuesday off Jolo, ultimately sank. General MacArthur is 62 to-day. President Roosevelt has sent him birthday greetings and also congratulated him on the fine stand he and his troops are making.
